2023 throwback: exhibitions and artworks I have made in the past year. ExhibitionsIn 2023 I participated in two group shows and organized one large solo exhibition of my work: an overview exhibition of all my works from 2018-2023. 1. Solo exhibition Colourful Art on Paper: Philo Ouweleen May 13 – June 4 2023 Opening: Saturday May 13: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Location: Galerie de Stoker, Amsterdam This solo exhibition was the largest overview of my art on display to date, with over 40 works. I received financial support from Fonds voor West and also collaborated with a lot of other artists and creatives. You can read more about the exhibition, workshop program and all collaborations in the expo blog: 2. Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 47 , Amsterdam. Third time participating in this lovely exhibition celebrating miniature art. I showed six works, four of which I made especially for the exhibition and feature landscapes inspired by my stay in the scenic Dutch art town Bergen. Want to see all artworks in more detail? Artwork10x10Artist This year I joined the artcollective 10x10Artist and made ten artworks measuring 10x10 cm. This square small format forces me to change my composition and is a nice and welcome challenge and change. The works can be divided into two series Memories from Japan and COCO (Colourful collage). These collage artworks are available through 10x10artist but not (yet) added to their webshop. If you are interested you can contact them here. [45 euro each] Paintings - 21st Century Bijin My take on the Bijin genre. Want to read more about this painting and the inspiration behind it? - Streams An experiment: working on canvas instead of paper. Also working with coloured pencil on canvas, which was challenging but also gave a nice result and texture to the painting. Social media is a good form of marketing, so I also tried to make a so-called reel (short video) on instagram for this painting. - Bergen landscape series Painting and drawing overlaps in the majority of my artworks. Using both techniques and materials, it is hard (and maybe not nescessary) to make a clear division. The aforementioned paintings were done in gouache paint, but also feature coloured pencil and marker. Drawings - Nachi falls Based on a visit years ago. I found the beautiful trail to the waterfall and hiked in the exhausting blazing Japanese summer heat. The Nachi waterfall did not disappoint - Long covid This work originated as a form of art therapy for myself, processing raw emotions such as sorrow, loss and frustration and a feeling of hopelessness and despair in the midst of a long covid relapse.Sharing the work online, I received several responses by people that could identify with or recognize similar emotions. I also started writing about long covid (in Dutch, below) Writing: Long covid perikelen: ik zocht dit jaar een uitlaatklep om long covid emoties te verwerken. Collage Looking at the amount of collage artwork I have this year, it trumps all other artforms in sheer numbers. In my collage artwork I can combine it all: drawing, painting and some works even include the art of paper marbling (which I've done assisted by my brother Kim Ouweleen a true professional in this art form). Collage is a playful and associative way of working for me, where I try to use my own materials as much as possible and also dig through my art archive for sketches and such that I can re-use. In this way I create new works and new worlds. The majority of these works I sell in thrifted frames, ready to hang. Scroll the side bar to see all, click to enlarge.

In this blog post I will look back on 2021, focusing on my art. For the majority of 2021 I have been feeling sick and exhausted, recovering from long covid . I see a lot of progress since this I got sick during the winter of 2020, but it is a long road. Even though this was a difficult year for me healthwise, I have felt very supported and managed to have five exhibitions despite it all. The first half of 2021 besides small artworks for the weekly 25 artproject, I spent little time drawing or painting. The second half of 2021 I finally got back into painting some bigger works and then I also managed to make five miniature works and three collages. This year even more so than before I discovered the power of creating: the energy it gives both my soul and body. View all exhibitions and works made in 2021 below. OVERVIEW oF EXHIBITIONS In 2021 As the covid pandemic regretfully continues and the Netherlands went in and out of lockdown, the cultural sector and yours truely found ways to continue. In 2021 I exhibited in -a pop-up artwindow curated by another artist ('Ride to Art', Amsterdam) - a café (Liever Hier, Amsterdam) - former tram depot (De Hallen, Amsterdam) - the largest bookstore of Amsterdam (Scheltema) and...more traditional - a gallery, in a very colourful diverse miniature art group exhibition (Galerie Paterswolde, Paterswolde). Click the slideshow to view the exhibition overview in pictures. Summary below . Want to view the exhibitions& read more? Click the blue buttons 1. Solo exhibition Art Window Ride To Art, Weesperzijde 22, Amsterdam, January 6- February 3rd 2021 On show 24/7, best viewed at night. Organized by artist Fleur Spolidor. Showed my painting 'Tengu on Mount Kurama'. 2. Solo exhibition 'Japan in gouache and watercolour' at Liever Hier (local coffee house and cake bakery), Nieuwendammerdijk 413 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. From 18 February until 20 June 2021. Displayed four paintings related to Japan. 3. Group exhibition Fantasy curated by See you at Art at De Hallen, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. 29 May - June 4th 2021. Showing two paintings from my series 'Japanese mythology'. 4. Solo exhibition Japan: Stories, Myths and Memories. Philo Ouweleen From 6 July to 29 August 2021 at Scheltema (Rokin 9, Amsterdam) Open every day from 10:00 – 19:00 hours. Located at the staircase, exhibition starts on third floor and ends on the ground floor. 'Japan: Stories, Myths and Memories’ is an exhibition with eleven paintings by artist and Japanologist Philo Ouweleen. Combining three art projects, - Stories from Kameoka, Japanese garden and Japanese mythology – Ouweleen presents a diverse and loving image of Japan.' 5. Group exhibition Visitekaartjes at Galerie Paterswolde 21 november 2021 - 29 january 2022 - Opening 21 november Hoofdweg 161, 9765 CB Paterswolde Showing six miniature works of 10x15 cm on paper (framed). ' OVERVIEW OF NEW WORKS & PROJECTS IN 2021 - WEEKLY 25 - Let's make more, share more, buy more art! Some of the works from the series in a digital collage The idea was simple: every week I posted on my social media a new small artwork (usually A5) for sale for just 25 euro. What started as a way for me to hold myself accountable to not only create more frequently, also became a project to stimulate my creativity and share my work at a price that was in the budget range for many people. One left for sale, the others are sold. Not all 26 works are uploaded on my website yet, but you can already view more than half by clicking the button below. - Reading - an ode to the joys and power of reading - MINIATURE ART AFFORDABLE miniature works of 10x15 cm on paper What started by making miniature art for a group exhibition of miniature art (Visitekaartjes, Galerie Paterswolde) , turned into another ongoing artproject. With the series 'Miniature Art' I want to offer small postcard size artworks for a price that many can afford, but also for a price that is more sustainable for me as an artist as opposed to the earlier 'weekly 25' artproject. Other benefits of this series include: an artistic challenge for me (making small artwork asks for a different way of thinking and being creative), easily collectible due to size and price for those interested, fits into nearly all interiors due to its small size, easy transport and storage (yes, very practical for me!) - COLLAGE- MINIATURE ART The artproject 'Miniature Art' also includes affordable collages. This medium really stimulates my sense of fantasy and imagination. For the three collages below, all photo materials were made by yours truely: from photos in the Netherlands to photo's in Japan, mixing. Other materials used are golden marker, chiyogami (Japanese paper) and marbled paper that I made at my brother's studio. - OTHER WORKS
